If you’re interested in a career in marketing or advertising, the best way to get your foot in the door with a prospective employer is through an internship. Magnani Continuum Marketing offers a rotational internship program, which provides the opportunity for students or recent-grads to learn the ins and outs of working at an advertising agency. Over the course of my internship, I’ve been fortunate enough to shadow various employees and pick up a few hard lessons on what it takes to be successful in this business. For those of you interested in a career in marketing, here are three of the most important lessons I’ve learned while interning at Magnani.
“A great idea can come from anywhere.”
Unlike a few other agencies, Magnani allows its interns to work on client-related projects almost immediately. The agency has a real collaborative atmosphere and stresses the importance of working together to meet its clients’ needs. During my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to sit in on company meetings and contribute to Magnani’s overall new business strategy, showing me that the agency really values its employees’ ideas, no matter where they come from. And through my interactions with various departments, I’ve learned that open communication and the exchange of ideas help generate even more creative work for our clients.
“Always pay attention to detail.”
As an intern, it’s absolutely critical that you check your work meticulously. You may be assigned to proofread a client’s request or help contribute to an ongoing marketing campaign. It’s important that you take the time to not only ensure the work is accurate, but that it’s tailored to the specific client’s needs. I’ve found it helpful to keep a small journal and write down everything I can. This way, I can always refer back to my notes and make sure I haven’t missed anything said or referenced by another employee. Paying attention to detail is also a good way to show that you’re serious about the work you do, and it may even lead to even more challenging projects down the line.
“Ask as many questions as you can.”
Another benefit of working at Magnani is the opportunity to interact with various professionals in the advertising field. Getting this exposure is a good way to learn about the different departments within the agency. From creative to production staff to account, each department can teach you a little something about the various nuances of working in this business. When engaging with other staff members, it’s important to ask as many questions as you can, and learn about the type of work they do. Asking questions not only demonstrates your curiosity in their work, but it also demonstrates your engagement with other staff members.
Lastly, if you’re thinking about interning at an agency, such as Magnani, then I would highly recommend that you take advantage of your time there. An internship is a good way to get exposed to a potential career path, and it’s important to make connections while you’re there. Your co-workers have an abundance of knowledge to share with you, and they may be a valuable resource when you’re trying to land a job in the near future. Just be sure to make an effort to contribute to ongoing projects by sharing your ideas, paying close attention to detail, and asking as many questions as you can. As you’re going through your internship, remember to keep these three lessons in mind and you’ll be sure to get the most out of your experience.
